In the pale light of the moon, high in the Rocky Mountains,
comes an eerie sound. It is half laughter and half howl.
It is the mating call of the Rocky Mountain Melk.
There have been very few sightings of these elusive critters
for they stay high in the Rockies above the snow line
and no one has ever been able to take a picture of one.
Until Now!!
It was just by chance that as we were getting ready to go back to camp
we noticed a movement on a ridge about 200 yards from us.
There was a strong smell of perfume and a strange feeling of power.
We weren't sure what was up but we grabbed our cameras and got ready.
Then, in a split second, they were in front of us blocking our path
so we stood very still not knowing what to do.
With unbelievable speed they grabbed our cameras and were gone.
We had heard stories of these creatures but didn't believe them.
There were 4 of them -- 2 adults and 2 children.
As we made our way back down the mountain
we knew no one would believe us.
But then!!
As we rounded a bend, up ahead were our cameras on the trail.
We picked them up and were surprised to see the film was used up.
Well, we decided to get our butts out of there ASAP.
Back in town we had the film developed and were in for a shock.
The Melk had taken pictures of themselves.
Now this was very surprising considering the adults were only 12 inches tall.
12 inches tall with an attitude!!
They had a portly body with the face of a Koala Bear
and their antlers were about 4 inches in length.
Their hair was long and fluffy and ranged in color
from a golden brown to pitch black.
To round out their features were big eyes and a broad smile.
But the most noticeable part was that everyone of them wore a belt.
Now you might wonder why they would have on a belt.
They wear a belt so they can carry a canteen.
You see, a Melk is a very thirsty creature and they always need water
so they carry a canteen. See more at rockymountainmelk.com.
